Binta Sofa is motivated by the myriad of bright colors and shapes of Africa. The Contemporary Sofa’s sculptural shape brings to our mind, African wood carvings, though its polyurethane rubber forms are soft. Mimicking a baobab tree, the Contemporary Sofa plants itself resolutely to the floor with chunky, trunk-like feet whose stylish forms evoke the hefty baobab. The Contemporary Sofa’s upholstery is a patchwork of Wax fabrics, the conventional textiles used by African women. Distinct patterns and colors emphasize the Sofa’s shape, insidious and molding its outline making a lively part of the Living Room Furniture. The vivid color contrasts are in the ritual of African textiles and color schemes; they summon up the graceful tailoring of women’s clothes as if the Contemporary Sofa were an African lady about to wear and augment the hot colors of their region.
